A scary sequel of the same category, Smile 2 has emerged in cinemas, offering an equally terrifying ending as its predecessor in 2022. The movie takes from where the first movie left; it is the same horror curse, a demonic being that feeds on the terror of the victim and makes them smile frightfully before killing them after seven days.
This time, we have Skye Riley (Naomi Scott), the world’s biggest pop star whose plans for a world tour are put into chaos when she becomes the newest target for this entity. But can Skye escape this curse, or will she suffer the same grim fate as the other victims? What happens to Skye from Smile 2?
Smile 2 Ending Explained
At one point, she is almost ready to shatter the curse. Chased by a nurse named Morris played by Peter Jacobson, she proposes that she stop her heart, then revive herself and awaken, since it cannot survive without a host.
Though she is reluctant at first, Skye ultimately consents when life becomes increasingly out of control. She kills her mother (Rosemarie DeWitt) by stabbing her through the heart during a scuffle at a wellness retreat before running off and meeting Morris at an abandoned Pizza Hut. Her travels are full of peril, including visions of her close friend Gemma (Dylan Gelula), who seeks to foil her plot.
At the Pizza Hut, Skye enacts Morris’s instructions, entering a walk-in freezer and injecting a syringe with the intent to stop her heart. The entity is unable to stop her, but she does deliver the injection—alas, only to be stopped by the cyanide already in her system.
To top it all, Skye wakes up on stage in Madison Square Garden just when she is about to perform the opening show of her tour. The crowd is immense and her mom is mysteriously alive while revealing that all what Skye did or experienced was just her hallucinations. Then, this entity possesses Skye completely, forcing her to end her life on stage.
The horror doesn’t stop there. The tragedy unfolds on the arena’s big screens in front of thousands of fans, perhaps contracting the curse to every viewer who witnessed it. Director Parker Finn explained the chilling decision in an interview with Entertainment Weekly:
As for me, “It felt like the most horrific thing I could do was to have her on stage, taken over by the Smile in front of 20,000 screaming fans. There’s the question of, is it being live-streamed? How far could it spread? The idea of her celebrity platform amplifying its reach felt intoxicating to me.”
With this grim end, a potential Smile 3 appears to be ready to carry the evil on an even larger scale.
Who is Morris in Smile 2? Was He Real?
Morris is played by Peter Jacobson and is an ER nurse who wants to save Skye. He reveals that his brother was a victim of this smile entity, which started off his obsession with finding it.
But his sincerity remains ambiguous. Fans believe Morris to be real, and others theorize he is yet another manifestation of Skye’s hallucinations with the conveniently well-timed messages that always reach the time when Skye is about to reach Gemma.
This adds a psychological element of tension in Smile 2: who is real, and what isn’t, in the grip of the curse.
