The tragic story of Victor’s mother, Miranda, was first touched upon earlier in From Season 3. However, the ending of Episode 9 finally reveals the full details of how she met her fate. Flashbacks in From Season 2, Episode 8, recount Victor’s childhood experience when monsters massacred the town. Victor, the sole survivor, remembers his mother hiding him and sister Eloise in the root cellar with Christopher. The next morning when Victor opened his eyes to find that all the townspeople were dead including Miranda and Eloise. Victor later explained how he discovered Miranda’s body close to the distant bottle tree, but its actual cause of death remained undiscovered.
In From Season 3, Episode 9, Victor recalls the conversation between Boy in White and Christopher. In the flashbacks, he blames himself for Miranda’s death as he returns to the root cellar, the last place he ever saw her alive. It is where Tabitha and Julie find him and embracing Victor in the root cellar, Tabitha begins to receive an immense vision of how Miranda died. Tabitha’s Vision Confirms the Truth
Tabitha’s Vision
Tabitha’s visions of death in Season 3, Episode 9 of From are intense as they show Miranda’s death and what takes her there.
When Victor and his peers delivered the message from Boy in White to Christopher regarding the children and the faraway tree, Miranda took up the responsibility when Christopher refused to act.
It’s unclear why Miranda specifically needed protection from Christopher, but in Tabitha’s dream, Miranda is hiding Victor and Eloise in the root cellar, kissing them good-bye, and running toward the faraway bottle tree. By the time Miranda reaches the tree, though, the Smiley Creature, one of From’s monsters, has caught up and attacked her. The same monster was later mortally attacked by Boyd in Season 2. The Smiley Monster fatally attacked Miranda, leaving her body near the tree for Victor to find. Tragically, Miranda never reached the lighthouse or completed the Boy in White’s plan for Christopher to save the children.
The Connection of Tabitha’s Vision
Somewhat contrary to early indications that Christopher might have been involved with her death, Episode 9 confirms that the monsters were responsible. The Significance of Tabitha’s Visions Tabitha’s vision sends a cyclical message about the mysteries of the town. Comparison between Tabitha and Miranda has been carried out throughout the lead-up season to Season 3, from their shared preference for Joni Mitchell’s Blue to giving identical bracelets to Jim and Henry. Both women also share the role of being “chosen” to save the children of the town.
Tabitha’s emotional reaction in the root cellar and her connection to Miranda through these visions suggest that perhaps part of Miranda’s soul resides within her.
The program also reinforces the idea that Tabitha’s vision is not merely a spurious glimpse but rather a memory. However, in Season 3, Episode 8, of From, the similarities between Jim and Henry are explored where Henry warns Jim not to repeat the same mistakes he made with Miranda. This implies that the town has reshaped the Matthews family to mirror Victor’s family and creates a window for Tabitha and Jim to avoid the dire outcomes of the past. If they could succeed where Miranda and Henry failed, then perhaps they could finally fulfill their roles in saving the children and breaking that circle.
