DC Universe is getting a new beginning under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran at DC Studios. And it has begun with the first major film under this leadership, Superman: Legacy. Scheduled to hit the box office next summer, it will join The Fantastic Four. Gunn will also direct, as he had been set to do so before taking over at DC. He is the Man of Steel’s reintroduction to theaters, a decade since his last stand-alone film.
Superman: Legacy heads into the final stretch of its shoot in Cleveland. It will be the first movie that launches DCU’s massive 10-year vision for movies, shows, and games. Instead of circumventing the Superman origin, the movie will simply follow Clark Kent as he grapples with his Kryptonian heritage and being raised as a human on the farm in Smallville, Kansas. Gunn gets a pass this year at San Diego Comic-Con, but Superman updates have folks pretty hyped.
David Corenswet is Superman
Following one of the most extensive casting processes ever, David Corenswet has been chosen for the role of Superman.
- David Corenswet will play the 12th actor to portray Superman in live action.
- • Opposite Corenswet, the role of Lois Lane goes to Rachel Brosnahan.
David Corenswet, at 30 years old, will be the new Superman/Clark Kent. The other person is Rachel Brosnahan. She has appeared in the lead of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. She is to portray Lois Lane.
The rest of the cast consists of some familiar faces at the Daily Planet- Jimmy Olsen portrayed by Skyler Gisondo, Perry White by Wendell Pierce, Steve Lombard by Beck Bennett, and Cat Grant by Mikaela Hoover. Smallville will feature Pruitt Taylor Vince and Neva Howell playing Jonathan and Martha Kent respectively. It is still very vague who could possibly take on Jor-El after Marlon Brando and Russell Crowe had their turns.
The Movie Will Also Introduce Other DCU Heroes
- The new DCU live-action film will be Superman: Legacy.
- Other heroes who will appear in the movie are Mr. Terrific, Guy Gardner, and Hawkgirl.
- Other projects which it would be connected to include such as Superman: Woman of Tomorrow.
The show will center mainly on Superman but is also excited to introduce viewers to the wider DCU and its heroes. Additionally, the show will have a great supporting cast that includes Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Edi Gathegi as Mr. Terrific, and María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer.
The movie also does some setting for Superman: Woman of Tomorrow, where Milly Alcock will be portraying Kara Zor-El. Other actors, like Sean Gunn as Maxwell Lord and Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., further imply connections to the other films in the DCU, such as Creature Commandos, Peacemaker Season 2.
Lex Luthor Is The Villain
- • Nicholas Hoult stars as Lex Luthor in the big-screen buildup to the DC universe.
- • Cut scenes that are exclusive extras demonstrate the darker side of Luthor, such as the many injuries • Other so-called bad guys include Brainiac and Ultraman
Lex Luthor will be portrayed by Nicholas Hoult, formerly Beast in the X-Men franchise. For Hoult, it’s also his first ever DC film, as he actually very nearly landed both the Batman and Superman roles for other movies.
Despite established villain Lex Luthor, rumors even surfaced that Brainiac will be arriving or maybe even Ultraman will come. Speculation came from leaked photos taken in Cleveland.
Superman: Return to Form
- Combining old looks with new elements, such as the New 52, to name one.
- Sporting his famous red trunks for the first time since Superman Returns in 2006.
One of the things that are very much going to be interesting about any reboot of a superhero would be the hero’s reinvention. Fans caught a glimpse in May as David Corenswet donned a suit that appears to have borrowed the best of classic and modern designs. The costume sports the Kingdom Come emblem, looser fit, and Superman’s iconic hairstyle. Red trunks are also back. Set photos have been really up for debate about its look, but it could very well be streamlined for the final cut.
Conclusion
Superman: Legacy, via James Gunn, is off to a flyer in revitalizing a character and embarking on a new chapter for the DCU. With a new cast, iconic villains, and connections to other heroes within the DC Universe, this is shaping up to be the massive entry in the franchise that should serve as part of the continuing future of the DCU. Fans will just have to wait and see how that ambition will play out as it hits the big screens.
