In the season 3 finale of From, a big surprise was dropped: Julie Matthews (Hannah Cheramy) is a “story walker,” and this is not a good thing for her future in Season 4. Julie’s adventure turned completely around in episode 8 when she went back to the dungeon ruins and started getting caught up in time travel. She first saw herself, Randall (A.J. Simmons), and Marielle (Kaelen Ohm) being terrorized by the Music Box Monster in the Season 2 finale. She then traveled back to the Season 2 premiere, where it became evident that Julie had always been the one to throw the rope that saved Boyd Stevens (Harold Perrineau).

Before being pulled from the ruins, Julie recollects the night her mom, Tabitha Matthews (Catalina Sandino Moreno), and Victor Kavanaugh (Scott McCord) escaped the tunnels where monsters reside during the day. When she returns to the current, she hears cries for “Anghkooey.” Now, Julie faces what she has experienced and her newfound ability to time travel and move forward with it.

Julie’s Role as a “Story Walker” Means She Can Observe the Past but Not Change It

In the finale, Julie confides in her brother Ethan (Simon Webster) at the Town diner about her time travel experiences. Ethan explains that she is a “story walker,” someone who can revisit “chapters of the story that have already happened.” Initially, Julie believes this ability might allow her to change past events, such as saving Tian-Chen Liu (Elizabeth Moy) or their brother Thomas. Ethan clarifies that the story walkers can only observe the past and cannot change it. It is more or less like the time-travel rule in Lost: “whatever happened, happened.” Julie throwing the rope to Boyd is not a change in history; it was always her who did it, although her future self had not experienced it yet. Their fates are already written, and Julie can only see them but not rewrite them.

Julie will probably attempt to stop catastrophes in From Season 4

Even with Ethan’s explanation, the closing scene of the finale suggests that Julie’s future self—now sporting shorter hair—tries to alter the past. She travels back in time to warn her father, Jim (Eion Bailey), about his impending death at the hands of the Man in the Yellow Suit (Douglas E. Hughes). But of course, the warning was useless as the Man in the Yellow Suit brutally kills Jim while Julie is left to witness the horrifying event.

It is not clear if this is Julie’s first attempt to alter the past, though her scratched and bloodied face hints at the dangers of her time-traveling efforts. Season 4 will probably be about contemporary Julie trying to prevent her father’s death and other tragedies that cannot be changed.

Once Julie accepts limits to her abilities, she may focus using her time-traveling ability to gather information from the past. Such knowledge could help both Julie and the other residents in the Town find ways on how to survive and most likely get out of those harrowing circumstances.
