The flagship franchise of the Sony Spider-Man Universe reaches a dramatic end in Venom: The Last Dance, with that including the death of one of the most important characters in Marvel, hence upgrading the emotional weight that concludes the movie. Before the official release of Venom 3, actor Tom Hardy confirmed that his movie is the last episode in the story of Eddie Brock and Venom. At the recent New York Comic Con, writer-director Kelly Marcel made a few hints that more symbiote stories may be on the horizon in this universe-so, it might not be over yet.
Yet Hardy’s words about Venom: The Last Dance and much of the promotional campaign done by Sony for the film suggests that one of the characters Eddie Brock or Venom may die.
Given that Hardy’s depiction of Venom has emerged as the preferred interpretation among fans of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe films, the potential loss of this character would constitute a substantial setback for the franchise; however, it is not an irrevocable situation. As the film has now premiered in theaters, we will analyze the major character death in Venom: The Last Dance and its ramifications for the future of Sony’s Marvel universe.
Explaining Venom: The Last Dance
At the climax of the movie, when Eddie and Venom seem no match for the army of Xenophages that Knull sends to capture the Codex, Venom makes his ultimate decision. He will sacrifice himself, fighting off as many Xenophages as he can and using his death to destroy the Codex. This is a key moment because it changes the tide of the battle, as Earth emerges victorious against the forces of Knull.
Venom kills himself to save Eddie and the world, thus ending Knull from destroying the earth, the sanctuary of the symbiotes. When Venom kills himself, the Codex, which holds Knull, no longer exists. Thus, Knull cannot destroy anything for a while. Finally, in Venom: The Last Dance, it is finally revealed that Knull is alive. He will destroy Earth, but at this point in time, Venom’s sacrifice protects the world. Even though there are various characters within the movie that die, Venom’s is surely the most emotional scene. Hardy has portrayed Eddie and voiced Venom in three stand-alone movies as well as in a post-credits scene of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Though Venom 3 potentially closes all plot points around characters’ storylines, his seemingly selfless decision to throw his life, along with the hope of seeing the Statue of Liberty for his most beloved friend, really seals a grave death. Still, there’s a chance that these eyes could see Venom again at another time.
Reasons for Optimism Regarding Venom’s Return
Although the primary form of Venom is killed with the Xenophages, the symbiote itself continues spreading across the multiverse. There’s still a piece of the symbiote in the MCU after the post-credits scene in No Way Home, as well as the sample Rex Strickland collected in his universe. The future of those pieces is unknown; however, they may be what brings Venom back to life or creates an entirely new symbiote. This sets a possibility that Venom might return, if not in this universe then in an alternate one.
