The wizarding community is in a frenzy of rumor, and the latest has the public on tenterhooks: is the highly charismatic Cillian Murphy to play the formidable role of Lord Voldemort in the new Harry Potter TV series?

Although Warner Bros. is not forthcoming about casting the Dark Lord, speculation has grown into a deafening chorus driven by fan frenzy and even from within the Potter universe itself. Murphy, with his intensely piercing stare and capacity to play complicated, oftentimes villainous roles in films like “Oppenheimer” and “Peaky Blinders,” has become a strong favorite in the fan cast for the scariest wizard of all time.

The possibility of Murphy playing Voldemort has sparked a fire of enthusiasm on the internet. Everyone thinks his subtle acting technique would add a fresh, chilling level of depth to the legendary villain, a character who was terrifyingly brought to life before by Ralph Fiennes in the movies. Some fans have even jokingly said that Murphy’s natural intensity could provide a genuinely frightening Voldemort without the heavy reliance on CGI.

Fanning the flames of speculation, the idea has even been endorsed by Ralph Fiennes himself. In a recent interview, asked whether he thought Murphy would be a good fit for the role, Fiennes praised him as a “fantastic actor” and called it a “wonderful suggestion,” and that he would be “all in favor” of it. The endorsement of the actor who so notoriously brought Voldemort to life in the films is a big deal with the fandom.

Bookmakers have weighed in with their thoughts on the speculation as well, with William Hill now backing Cillian Murphy to replace He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, with odds of 2/1 on him. Bill Skarsgård and even a return by Fiennes himself are also in the running, but Murphy’s name continues to be mentioned the most as the most sought-after choice by fans.

Chris Columbus, who directed the first two Harry Potter films, has also expressed his backing for Murphy for the role, stating that he would be “thrilled” to have the actor play the legendary villain.

Although the casting of the main Harry, Ron, and Hermione trio is still in the process, recent casting announcements of several of the key Hogwarts faculty members have raised the stakes for the Voldemort casting.

The most recent cast members announced include John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch. Maybe most significantly, Luke Thallon’s casting as Professor Quirrell, who notoriously concealed Voldemort in the first book, adds an extra layer of intrigue to the Voldemort casting speculation.

The show, which begins filming this summer at Warner Bros. Studio in Leavesden, UK – the same location as the original movies – will be a decade-long, faithful adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s classic book series. The longer format could potentially allow for a more in-depth exploration of Voldemort’s complex history and motivations, rendering a strong actor such as Murphy an even more desirable choice.

While the wizarding community holds its breath for an official announcement, the possibility of Cillian Murphy playing the dark robes of Lord Voldemort has definitely become one of the most talked-about aspects of the new Harry Potter franchise, with the prospect of giving a chilling and compelling performance as the iconic villain.
